Root Compound Definition and Examples in English

In morphology, a root compound is a compound construction in which the head element is not derived from a verb. Also called a primary compound  or an  analytic compound, contrast with synthetic compound. Root compounds are made up of free morphemes, and the semantic relation between the two elements in a root compound is not inherently restricted. Types of Compounds Compound WordsCompound AdjectiveCompound NounCompound Verb Examples and Observations Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy: Let us call a NN [noun-noun] compound like hairnet or mosquito net, in which the right-hand noun is not derived from a verb and whose interpretation is therefore not precisely predictable on a purely linguistic basis, a primary or root compound. (The term root compound is well established but not particularly appropriate, because primary compounds include many, such as climbing equipment or fitness campaigner, neither of whose components is a root in the sense [discussed earlier in the text]). Let us call a NN compound like hair restorer or slum clearance, in which the first element is interpreted as the object of the verb contained within the second, a secondary or verbal compound. (Yet another term sometimes used is synthetic compound.) Paradoxically, then, although verbs are relatively rare as elements in compounds in English (the swearword pattern is unusual), verbal compounds, in the sense just defined, are common. Rochelle Lieber: Synthetic compounding is highly productive in English, as is the root compounding of nouns. Noun-adjective (sky-blue), adjective-noun (blackboard), and adjective-adjective (red hot) root compounds are also relatively productive. Root compounds of other categories are harder to form and relatively unproductive (for example, verb-verb compounds such as stir-fry or noun-verb compounds such as babysit). Mark C. Baker: The first member of a root compound in English is not very fussy as to its category. It can easily be a noun or an adjective, and even verb roots and bound roots that are never used as independent elements in the syntax are possible. It is also possible for two adjectives to combine to make an adjective, or for a noun and an adjective to form an adjective. (1a) doghouse, strawberry, suspension bridge, breezeway (N N)(1b) greenhouse, blueberry, high school, fairway (AN)(1c) drawbridge, runway (VN)(1d) cranberry, huckleberry (XN)(1e) red-hot, icy-cold, bitter-sweet (AA)(1f) pea-green, steel-cold, sky-high (NA) In contrast, the attributive construction is highly category-specific. Only an adjective can modify a noun in this way, not a noun or a verb, or a category-less root. Thus, blackbird contrasts with black bird and greenhouse contrasts with green house; the latter examples have simpler. more compositional meanings. But there are no expressions such as dog house, draw bridge, or cran berry (with no compound stress) that correspond in the same way to doghouse, drawbridge, and cranberry. Nor can a noun modify an adjective, or an adjective modify another adjective without the mediation of an affix like -ly.   Strang Burton, Rose-Marie Dechaine, and Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson: If two roots combine, as in bluebird, linguists call this a compound or a root compound. Most English compounds show a pattern that morphologists call the righthand head rule. It goes like this: If the first word is of category X and the second of category Y, then the compound is of category Y. (X and Y stand for the major grammatical categories: verb, noun, adjective, and preposition.) The head determines the category of the compound--so Y is the head. The rule can be written as X Y → Y.

Writing an Example Term Paper

Writing an Example Term PaperExample term papers have two parts. The first part is about finding a topic for the paper, and the second part is writing a decent paper. The first part of the paper is where you will describe in as much detail as possible what your paper is about, and this should be as accurate as possible.Writing for example papers is easier than most people think. You can start by picking one or two ideas and writing about them briefly. They are easily short enough to fit on an outline, and if you have enough ideas, you don't need to start out with all the stories. You can start with a subject and then branch out from there, using the same type of idea, with a new twist. If you start with an idea, you can develop it into more than just a title and send it off to any high school for example term papers. You can try a similar approach if you want to write a science-based paper and can see that you have made some progress. After you have started writing the paper, and you h ave the outline in hand, try writing the paper. The first draft of the paper can be as long as you like, it depends on how involved you want to get, but the idea is to edit the first draft before sending it off. The reason you are doing this is because the paper has to be accepted and printed. When you have finished writing the paper, put the same ideas you have written down into your outline. This is where you can show examples of other stories you have written, and also examples of how they have been written. It can also be used to pick up on key phrases and vocabulary. By the time you are done with your outline, you will have a more fully developed paper. One great example term paper is one about love. There are many things to learn about love, from the emotional dynamics of the two people involved, to the definition of love, and even to the different types of love, such as the admiration, the practical understanding, and the romantic understanding. To make the most of the examples of the love you have found, you will need to find a way to keep your ideas interesting and original. You can choose to develop a single idea to save time, or you can combine several ideas and use a different genre.

Faubas who had no intention of agreeing with the Brown Verdict because he was against the idea of desegregation. He attempted to prevent the process of allowing those students into the school but was successfully beaten by President Eisenhower. Another governor going by the name Herman Tallmadge of Georgia also disagreed with the idea of desegregation and showed this by making it illegal to spend money on the schools. Governors like Faubas and Tallmadge were one of the reasons for the desegregation of schools becoming a major problem because they deliberately tried to make things difficult, not only for black people but also for the Supreme Court who had removed the idea of segregation from the constitution. The statement of purpose for Coca-Cola is "to revive the world, to motivate snapshots of positive thinking, and to make esteem and have any kind of effect wherever we lock in." This is an arrangement of standards that the Coca-Cola Company clings to at the corporate and business levels of the organization. Regardless of whether it is dealing with the worldwide market of Coca-Cola or offering the individual brands related with Coca-Cola, the organization endeavors to meet their statement of purpose inside and out. Coca-Cola and the greater part of its related items are associated with mingling and messing around with relatives and companions. It is this association that the Coca-Cola Company endeavors to reinforce when offering their items. Coca-Cola makes this association through effective commercial battles for the greater part of their brands everywhere throughout the w orld (Adamides, 2015). At the corporate and business level, Coca-Cola ensures that the soda pops they offer epitomize fun and energy. By driving this idea into the psyches of shoppers all around, Coca-Cola turns into a quintessential piece of any party. Another business procedure executed by Coca-Cola is the improvement of new items for shoppers. New kinds of Coke, for example, Cherry or Vanilla Coke and more advantageous soda alternatives, for example, Diet Coke advance to a wide range of individuals. By making a soda pop that can be delighted in by a wide range of individuals, Coca-Cola unites individuals and expand upon their concept of "invigorating the world and having any kind of effect" (Yury Anastasia, 2012). Corporate Identification Another business system utilized by Coca-Cola is to utilize propels in innovation to help make a more effective and cost amicable methods for soda pop creation. This can be seen with the advances made in the Coke bottle including its novel outline and less utilization of plastic. Coca-Cola is an extremely "green" organization and they attempt to decrease the measure of plastic they use and additionally reuse at whatever point conceivable (Agnihotri, 2014). These business systems are helpful in acknowledging Coca-Cola's statement of purpose. Notwithstanding, there are some negative parts of the business procedures actualized by Coca-Cola. Their central goal is engaging each person and with an influence anywhere their drinks are offered. Whatever the case may be, regarding communicating particular groups, such as people who continue with a more advantageous way of life, TCCC might not notice. Even though they could try engaging each person, some folks are there who just do not have the chance to buy the drinks. TCCCs system of applying modernization to cause production to be more effective could eventually cost them a lot of capital. Moreover, endeavors of TCCC are there to end up an outstanding item all around the globe, a slip underway or a scandal may probably wind up operations worldwide or might bring about a reduction in sales (Barrye et al, 2011). Such a pecking order of TCCC together with its partners lets the corporation to implement its trade techniques effectively. A corporation is defined as a big company or a collection of businesses which is combined and managed as one legal entity. A product portfolio is essentially the variety of things offered by a commercial enterprise. On the other hand, a Service portfolio is the fundamental source for every material of every service in a business enterprise. Service is scheduled accompanied by its present history and status individually (Xuanwei Ali, 2017). Business Unit Research Coca-Cola utilizes a colossal measure of information technology in addition to information systems to handle the distinctive parts of their global operations. TCCC uses Information Technology (IT) to assist in overseeing budgetary procedures, providers, container associates (distributors), etcetera. The better measure of IT applied by TCCC allows the manufacturer to finish its corporate-level strategy in a skillful manner. TCCC endows the shipment and packaging of their merchandise to groups that formed relations. Such groups include distributors approved to sell drinks from TCCC in addition to storage establishments pack the products for shoppers utilization (Benita Lynne, 2010). The Strategic Business Unit (SBU) is the division of the significant business where each hub concentrates on making benefits because of its special operation or geographic focal points it has over alternate regions (Calandro, 2014). The units major expound attentive showcasing plans, rivalries examination and also participate in offering advertising efforts that are suited to the locales they are working. They all however aid the benefit of the whole business. They are however reliant on the parent association in any capacity. The Coca cola oversees in excess of 500 brand of the beverages however the most known is the coke drinks. To pick up a reasonable market control of the worldwide markets, the firm depends on the foundation of a few strategic business Units which can successfully concentrate on the special normal for a given market. In any case, these SBUs are guided by the non-specific system of the parent firm. The association's corporate nonexclusive or base technique The non -specific system of the coca cola joins the parts of value authorities, separation, and market division. Separation is a key information that the firm has embraced. This incorporates the item separation as well as the separation of the hazard it is confronting in the market (Sara Stuart, 2016). These wonders have been empowered by the consonant advancement and separation of the items over this long stretch. It has empowered the coca cola to create drinks that suit practically every fragment of the populace. The beverages run from sweet beverages to biter drinks. There is water, slim down beverages, and additionally the caffeinated drinks. This procedure has likewise observed the Coca Cola create varying sizes of the drink to suit the diverse economies of the business sectors. For instance, in the developing economies, the firm has expanded the volume of the jugs and brought down the costs. This is to be because of the very value delicate and flexible request of such markets. In the created markets where the buying force is high, the request is inelastic and the firm has lessened the amounts and expanded the costs. Showcase initiative procedure has been kept up perpetually by the Coca Cola company. This is because of the main way of the Coca Cola items in the business sector s. Being the worldwide pioneer, the firm can either lower or escalate the cost of its items depending with the coveted returns. In any case, since the firm is a worldwide administrator, it has kept on keeping up smaller edge for the item (Calandro, 2011). Business Unit Revenue In business, revenue is the sum of money which a business entity really obtains all through a particular time in terms of several months. It entails deductions and discounts for refunded stock. Furthermore, it is the uppermost mark or gross pay amount where expenses are deducted to come up with the profits. The largest revenue center for the coca cola company is the US market, it raked in 15% of global revenue (Hofmann, 2010). Other countries were less than that in 2016. The Coca-Cola company (TCCC) expects to be twofold in scope in their agenda for 2011-20 and plainly created plans to implement this assignment. TCCC may perhaps accomplish this through extending its geographical extent; showcasing its drinks in other countries, and further by coming up with innovative products as purchasers arrangements adjusts or end up plainly engaged by other soft-drinks manufacturers (Robert Robert, 2010). Being aggressive in emerging markets and supporting expansion in major marketplaces is still the main errand. TCCC is endeavoring to control sales in developed markets having a keen eye on carbonated drinks. Use of carbonated drinks in emerging markets continues to expand. The Middle East and Africa is frequently identified as the important growth territory. TCCC has conveyed a financial goal to double its income in the vicinity of 2010 and 2020. TCCC has considered building its range of non-carbonates after analysis of profitable locations in some carbonated-drinks marketplaces, and the continuing health and wellbeing slant influencing soda pops markets everywhere. Its procurements are concerning liquid refreshments. TCCC revealed good results for a whole year globally, volume consignment of 5% and revenue produced 5% in 2013. Developed marketplaces did fine, examples are Japan, Canada, and the US. Sales in Europe dropped 2% for the whole year, replicating constant uncertain macroeconomic environments (Passport, 2013). As far as emerging marketplaces are concerned, the soft-drinks manufacturer created solid volume improvement in key emerging marketplaces, such as India (up 17%), Russia (8%) and Thailand (22%) in that financial period concerning 2013. Slightly swayed by the modest economy, the company distributed 5% capacity increase for the entire time, and later a New Year in Chinese celebrations added to the reasonable sales. Be that as it may, the company is setting up vigorously in the country with complete confidence of its business operation. TCCC detailed that strong development proceeded in nations with per capita utilization of the organization's brands of under 150 oz. servings for every year, with volume up 7% for the entire year (Anon., 2010). External Environment Analysis An operating environment of a business is the overall of internal and external influences that impact a commercial entity. Managers ought to consider that internal dynamics as well as external dynamics is able to affect the other then function at the same time to distress a commercial entity. Let's say, a safety and health guideline is an outer dynamic which affects the inner working of occupational processes. Moreover, a few external dynamics are out of reach. Such dynamics are usually known as external controls (Richardson, 2016). In a political environment, those non-mixed drinks of TCCC are in the food category, regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). FDA oversees the methodology of the carbonated drinks. The government penalizes establishments that fail to meet the standards and procedures of the regulation. Changes in Accounting Standards, tax collection prerequisites (charge rate changes, altered duty law understandings, passageway of new expense laws), and environmental laws either in local or outside specialists (Hong-wei John, 2013). A recession impacted the organization's operations in 2001, but with dynamic undertakings, the Economy of the US estimated to have come back to confident progress the following year. As a result of the worldwide subsidence, TCCC may access financial resources and position them to diverse products, since the cost of loans are reduced (Parnell, 2010). Regarding social analysis, this investigates the manner in which changes in the public eye influence the association, for example, changing ways of life and states of mind of the market. The larger part of US natives is practicing more beneficial ways of life. That has firmly impacted the offers of non-mixed refreshment division in light of the fact that numerous clients are changing to filtered water and eating routine colas like; Coca-Cola Light or Zero, rather than drinking brew or different refreshments. A couple of components which affect the companys unique products to shift from the usual results is the proficiency of establishments due to technology. Marketing or publicizing, and special projects, the technology developments of television and the internet that use brilliant influences to showcase by means of different forms of communication. Such technologies cause the products/drinks to be appealing and supporting the suggestion to sell the products. In advertisements, TCCC have a tendency to use this technology in this manner, to adequately offer its drinks (Ingrid Jonn, 2011). Environmental variables or climatic conditions; for instance, amid winter individuals don't devour anything cool so as not to influence their wellbeing and vice versa amid summer; individuals devour a great deal of beverages and this builds the deals the offers of the items, so the climate state of different nations can decide the level at which individuals take cool beverages like Coca-Cola. The drinks manufacturer keeps patents and legal rights entirely associated with their commercial entity, comprising older and newer merchandises made through an original method (Oluikpe, 2012). Sources of Sustainable Competitive Advantage (SCA) The structural approach analyzes and accentuates the part of section and versatility hindrances that are raised to shield an organization from the focused powers and dangers from current competitions, substitutes, and potential new participants. Matthias et al, (2012) highlighted four conditions that are important to accomplish an SCA. They are asset heterogeneity, asset idleness, ex-bet and ex-present cutoff points on the rivalry. His model was material for single business methodology and expansion. Dynamic Capability View concentrates on the advancement of assets with lease era potential instead of the ownership. Dynamic Capability View imitates the perspectives of the Schumpeterian hypothesis and the developmental economics. Blue Ocean indicates the obscure market space, untainted by rivalry. The key point in Blue Ocean is making the privilege vital moves. Rivalries are never utilized as benchmarking components rather the occupants frequently make blue sea, for the most part with their momentum center organizations (Mysen, 2012). Strategic direction TCCC should proceed with the development of low-calorie drinks, especially low-calorie carbonated drinks. Governments everywhere throughout the world are publicizing heftiness concerns and the sugar substance of sodas has gone under expanding examination. TCCC has effectively grown low and zero calorie drinks that are the top-positioned marks inside their classes. Be that as it may, the organization ought to keep on researching low-calorie drinks and specifically, common low-calorie alternatives, for example, those utilizing stevia and later advancement friar natural product. TCCC has as of now solidly settled itself in developing markets, commanding carbonates in most and regularly ruling the whole soda pops marketplace. Be that as it may, the organization can't lay on its trees as it will see expanding household rivalry while worldwide contenders, outstandingly PepsiCo, will be anxious to take TCCC's piece of the overall industry. On the off chance that the organization is to twofold in size more than 2010-2020 then BRIC development and advancement of significant optional markets, for example, Indonesia and Vietnam are fundamental (Mine Livia, 2010). Regions, for example, "better for you", "actually solid" and "invigorated/utilitarian" fit well inside soda pops positions. TCCC as of now has a scope of juices and waters that could end up being future champs for the organization, however, it must proceed to create and advance new HW edges inside its brands. A key development range could be braced/utilitarian beverages, where opportunities to include new practical fixings are consistently being found. The prevalence of carbonated soda pops has faded in many markets or has, in any event, observed a lull in development. TCCC ought to hope to grow its offers of different refreshments. Classes in which the organization is not overwhelming all-inclusive incorporate herbal tea. Pushing advancement in these classifications would give an all-encompassing development opportunity into the terrifically vital Chinese and Asia Pacific regions. Dairy is another region TCCC ought to investigate encourage taking the value interest in Core Power Ltd (Passport, 2013). Concluding remarks In international business, companies need strategic speculation and only through developing great corporate strategies can they become plainly strategically competitive. A procedure of a business organization is a comprehensive master plan stating how the organization will achieve its mission and targets. A strategy is critical because it is all-inclusive. It assists companies to be current with changing environment, provides a superior understanding of the external condition, limits focused impediment by anticipating the vision, mission, and destinations of the venture. Moreover, a corporate strategy boosts motivation of workers and fortifies simple management. It frames the basis for implementing actions. A methodology may perhaps be clustered regarding importance to four stages: key business stage, practical and working stage, and corporate stage. The approaches to system making are the delegation approach, the chief architect approach, the collaborator or team approach and the business entrepreneur approach. Procedure or strategy formulation is an on-going process comprising procedures such as defining the mission, vision, and targets. References Adamides, E., 2015. There are many fairy tales in which we are told when we are younger that gives us very important advice. For example, the story of Jack and the Beanstalk teaches us not to squander our money on silly things. We then have many movies, TV shows, music, and books that have good morals in them. All we have to do is look for them. Like in Animal Farm, we learn that we should not try to dominate others because he ends up turning into the person/people that dominated over us. So, yes, our society does have entertaining ways to give young people important advice. 2.â€Å"The mind of man is of two kinds, pure and impure: impure when in the bondage of desire, pure when free from desire.† This quote is basically saying that we should not desire. We should just like what we have and not worry about achieving more. This way, we will be happy because we will have a pure mind. â€Å"All living creatures are led astray as soon as they are born, by the delusion that this relative world is real.† This quote is basically saying that we are not of this world. This world is just a stopping place, and soon, we will go to another world. This will continue until we have become enlightened, and find the true world. 3.On the most part, it is not alright to break our word. However, there are instances that it is for the best. Sometimes we have to break our word for the greater good. If someone is in danger, and you told a friend that you would be careful, it would be alright to break your word to help that person in danger. Or, if you promised a friend not to tell anyone a secret, but if you didn’t tell someone, your friend could get in trouble or injure themselves, it would be alright to break your word. It just really depends on the situation. 4.My favorite part of the â€Å"Bhagavad-Gita† is the quote â€Å"The tortoise can draw in his legs: The seer can draw in his senses. I call him illuminated.† I find it very interesting because I find that becoming illuminated is one of the best things to do. This way, life will be good, because a person would not have to worry about what was going to happen. An illuminated person would just be able to live a life in peace, and during a time in which our world is in chaos, living a life of peace would be a great thing. 5.Most people in the United States are not even-tempered in success and failure. Many people are just worried about succeeding in life that if they don’t, they get angry. And with teens, it’s all drama. I don’t know how so much drama can happen in a teen’s life, but I guess it does. So, Americans really aren’t even-tempered in success and failure. Analyzing three poems by three different poets Assignment

Analyzing three poems by three different poets - Assignment Example The mother is sad because of her failure to execute her roles effectively as a mother. Brooks portrays a feeling of remorse, longing sadness, and incomplete destinies that the mother had hoped to achieve. In the third line of the poem’s second stanza the mother is sad because she cannot breastfeed the babies since they are dead. There is a sense of guilt and resentment for aborting the babies. The mother also expresses sorrow and justifiable reasons as if yearning for forgiveness. In the last lines, the poem vividly portrays mother’s love for her aborted children. The mother shows deep love for the aborted infants even though she knew them only for a short while. Therefore, the mother used depicts deep emotions for her children yet she aborted them. She is sentimental and sensitive and at the same time heartless because she aborted her babies. The poem has a smooth flow and vividly elucidates the events occurring in a straightforward manner. The poet used short lines with abortion personification employed as exhibited in the first line of the poem. Gwendolyn uses imagery style in the third line of the first stanza of her poem, she cites a mother referring to her aborted babies as damp small pulps. Therefore, the image of the aborted babies vividly displays in the readers’ mind. Imagery, death and feelings in the poem are concrete as they serve their roles for usage effectively. The mother is a symbolic representation of real life women and their actions plus associated consequences. Therefore, the poem plays a crucial role of warning women who opt to commit abortion. Structure -wise, the poem has a regular rhyme scheme, which the poet properly portrays especially in the first stanza. However, it is inconsistent and is majorly end-rhyme. Gwendolyn also employs the use of repetition for emphasis as well as contributing to

Is David Hume's argument against William Paley here a strong one Essay

Is David Hume's argument against William Paley here a strong one - Essay Example From the evidence of inventors who developed new ideas, this argument is flawed because there would be no logical design that the inventors had encountered before designing their inventions. This indicates that Hume’s argument was based on ignorance; there was no way that he would know that new designs would be invented; designs that would negate his argument. Hume’s argument is also flawed because of the apparent contradictions present in the argument itself. A summary of the argument indicates that Hume believed that an individual should only believe that an object is made from design if the individual had previously encountered similar design. Therefore, the argument by Hume seems to indicate that an individual who had not encountered design should not attribute designs to the working of a designer. This argument means that Hume preempts the human mind; the argument tries to negate the working of the human mind in deducing the result of design. The other factor that indicates that Hume’s argument was a weak argument is in the design of the universe. Contrary to the biological argument presented by Hume, the universe is an infinite product of design. This means that any human being can attribute the design of the universe to some supreme deity, a fact that Hume tries to negate in his argument. The anthology that an individual has to have experienced design in order to recognize other instances of design would serve to negate the possibility of a supreme deity who gives humans deductive ability. Therefore, the argument by Hume can be considered weak because of its structural failures and the proposition. The fact there exists unique designs in the universe is also proof that Hume’s argument was not strong. This is because design is the product of the intellect, creativity, and innovativeness. Hume’s argument seems to propose that design is born of

Partnership and Norms Essay Example for Free

Partnership and Norms Essay Partner selection and dating is an imperative basis in an individual’s accomplishment of one of his psychosocial needs. Selecting a partner and the process of dating is crucial in determining the quality and nature of future relationships and marital decisions. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, as represented by a pyramid which indicates the basic needs of man and its importance in self-actualization, the third most significant need of man is the need to belong and be loved by others (Huitt, 2004). An individual’s need to become an accepted and valuable part of society, and the need to affiliate with people of the opposite sex, is an innate characteristic of man. Therefore, selecting a partner becomes an important decision that one must make based on the most convenient choice. These choices, however, vary under various circumstances, as it is influenced by society, culture, priorities, experiences, etc. For instance, differing concepts and perceptions about love vary for individuals; therefore their decisions in selecting a partner also vary. One’s concept of love, dating, partner selection, relationship, marriage, etc. may be influenced by social factors. Society often dictates standards and norms of dating. For example, individuals who live in a society which values social status and the preservation of this particular position in society practices arranged marriages. This is usually true, especially during the age of kingdoms and monarchs. Partner selection and dating may also be influenced by culture. In ancient China, marrying individuals from different cultural backgrounds was forbidden. In this case, race and cultural compatibility becomes influential in choosing a partner. At present, however, choosing a partner and the rules of dating have changed and have evolved into a more liberal milieu. Individuals have acquired the freedom to choose partners and date, depending on their personal views and perceptions of love, relationship, and marriage as formed by their priorities and experience, such as emphasizing importance on educational attainment, occupational status, etc. These choices and priorities are backed up theories which explains once social and personal construct regarding the matter. For instance, idolizing a parent influences individuals to choose partners with characteristics similar to their parents, etc. There are a lot of significant information that pertains to partner selection and dating (Mohatta, 2006), however, the main point is that choices and decisions being made regarding an individual’s selection of a partner, setting up of dating rules and principles to live by, reasons for staying in or leaving a relationship, going into marriage, etc. vary depending on several factors, such as culture, environment, society, family, personal choices and experiences, priorities, etc. Similar to partner selection and dating, sexual norms and sexual relationships also vary depending on one’s culture and perceptions. Two different societies were mentioned and described in the lecture which greatly explains the variation between these two societies regarding sexual norms and practice. The main argument stated herein is that an individual’s concept and perception of sex is learned from the society where he belongs. This is proved by the obvious knowledge that children, as young as they are, do not understand nor have ideas and contributions pertaining to issues and discussions regarding sex. Therefore, individuals gather the idea, perception, meaning, and importance of sex from the environment. For instance, a family environment which is not open about the idea of talking about sex with their children because members of the family regard it as a wrong deed is passed on to their children. In contrast, a society open to sex education, especially in educational institutions, allows students to acquire knowledge about sexual norms and practices, leading them to become aware of all its aspects. This can be important in informing students about sexually transmitted diseases, teenage pregnancy, safe sex, etc. With these alarming issues, most especially the high rate of individuals who acquire AIDS from numerous sexual encounters, or teenagers facing the responsibility of motherhood and parenting, more societies are accepting and pushing for the administration of sexual education in educational institutions. On the other hand, religious institutions are battling this societal move by reiterating their disapproval of the use of contraceptives, as encouraged by sex education, based on religious teachings and principles (Villaviray-Giolagon, 2007). Therefore, students who absorb information learned from sexual education may start to become open-minded about sexual responsibility; while on the other hand, churchgoers strengthen their stand for abstinence and marriage before sexual interaction. These two opposing viewpoints from educational institution and the religious institutions illustrate how an individual’s idea and perception of sexual norms and sexual relationships vary depending on environment.

all quiet on the western front :: essays research papers

What was going through Remarque’s mind? Paul is caught in WWI fighting to prove his loyalty to his country. Amidst the war, he struggles to find meaning in the new image he has become. In the beginning, their teacher persuades everyone in the class to enlist in the military to fight the glorious war. Thinking this is an honourable idea; everyone joins even those who secretly fear the battlefield. However, they are forced into volunteering. Not enlisting is like turning their back on their own country. To the teachers, schoolmasters, and older men, going to war is the best thing a man could do for his country. In reality, Paul and his friends do not want to kill or be killed. After Behm became Paul's first dead schoolmate, Paul viewed the older generation bitterly, particularly Kantorek, the teacher who convinced Paul and his classmates to join the military, feeling alone and betrayed in the world that they had left for him. Paul's generation felt empty and isolated from the rest of the world due to the fact that they had never truly established any part of themselves in civilian life. In the story, Paul tells us that all the older soldiers are stilled linked to their present lives. These older soldiers have wives, children, jobs and interests to come back to. According to Baumer, all the younger soldiers have to come back to is their parents and maybe a girlfriend. The young soldiers have no jobs and no idea on what life beyond the war will be like for them. All the young soldiers know how to do is fight in the war. And that is what they do till they are injured, or killed. This war has totally ruined the lives of Baumer, his friends, and all the young G erman soldiers who fought in this war. At boot camp, Himmelstoss abused Paul and his friends, yet the harassment only brought them closer together and developed a strong spirit amongst them. After a battle Paul was given leave and returned home only to find himself very distant from his family as a result of the war. He left in agony knowing that his youth was lost forever. Before returning to his unit, Paul spent a little while at a military camp where he viewed a Russian prisoner of war camp with severe starvation problems and again questioned the values that he had grown up with, compared to the values while fighting the war.

Rabindranath Tagore Story & Poem Essay

A Nandalal Bose illustration for â€Å"The Hero†, part of the 1913 Macmillan release of The Crescent MoonThe â€Å"Sadhana† period, 1891–1895, was among Tagore’s most fecund, yielding more than half the stories contained in the three-volume Galpaguchchha, itself a group of eighty-four stories. [18] They reflect upon Tagore’s surroundings, on modern and fashionable ideas, and on mind puzzles. Tagore associated his earliest stories, such as those of the â€Å"Sadhana† period, with an exuberance of vitality and spontaneity; these traits were cultivated by zamindar Tagore’s life in villages such as Patisar, Shajadpur, and Shilaida. Seeing the common and the poor, he examined their lives with a depth and feeling singular in Indian literature up to that point. [79] In â€Å"The Fruitseller from Kabul†, Tagore speaks in first person as a town-dweller and novelist who chances upon the Afghani seller. He channels the longing of those trapped in mundane, hardscrabble Indian urban life, giving play to dreams of a different existence in the distant and wild mountains: â€Å"There were autumn mornings, the time of year when kings of old went forth to conquest; and I, never stirring from my little corner in Calcutta, would let my mind wander over the whole world. At the very name of another country, my heart would go out to it †¦ I would fall to weaving a network of dreams: the mountains, the glens, the forest †¦. â€Å". [80] Many of the other Galpaguchchha stories were written in Tagore’s Sabuj Patra period (1914–1917; also named for one of Tagore’s magazines). [18] A 1913 illustration by Asit Kumar Haldar for â€Å"The Beginning†, a prose-poem in The Crescent MoonTagore’s Golpoguchchho (Bunch of Stories) remains among Bengali literature’s most popular fictional works, providing subject matter for many successful films and theatrical plays. Satyajit Ray’s film Charulata was based upon Tagore’s controversial novella, Nastanirh (The Broken Nest). In Atithi (also made into a film), the young Brahmin boy Tarapada shares a boat ride with a village zamindar. The boy reveals that he has run away from home, only to wander around ever since. Taking pity, the zamindar adopts him and ultimately arranges his marriage to the zamindar’s own daughter. However, the night before the wedding, Tarapada runs off—again. Strir Patra (The Letter from the Wife) is among Bengali literature’s earliest depictions of the bold emancipation of women. The heroine Mrinal, the wife of a typical patriarchical Bengali middle class man, writes a letter while she is travelling (which constitutes the whole story). It details the pettiness of her life and struggles; she finally declares that she will not return to her husband’s home with the statement Amio bachbo. Ei bachlum: â€Å"And I shall live. Here, I live†. Haimanti assails Hindu marriage and the dismal lifelessness of married Bengali women, hypocrisies plaguing the Indian middle classes, and how Haimanti, a sensitive young woman, must—due to her sensitiveness and free spirit—sacrifice her life. In the last passage, Tagore directly attacks the Hindu custom of glorifying Sita’s attempted self-immolation as a means of appeasing her husband Rama’s doubts. Musalmani Didi examines Hindu-Muslim tensions and, in many ways, embodies the essence of Tagore’s humanism. Darpaharan exhibits Tagore’s self-consciousness, describing a fey young man harboring literary ambitions. Though he loves his wife, he wishes to stifle her own literary career, deeming it unfeminine. Tagore himself, in his youth, seems to have harbored similar ideas about women. Darpaharan depicts the final humbling of the man as he acknowledges his wife’s talents. As do many other Tagore stories, Jibito o Mrito equips Bengalis with a ubiquitous epigram: Kadombini moriya proman korilo she more nai—†Kadombini died, thereby proving that she hadn’t†.
